Cedar City Council Meeting - June 5, 2019

An attempt to enshrine as a public monument a painted image of a Native American and the accompanying name 'Redmen' on a water tank atop a hill in Cedar City drew some emotional testimony this week during a public hearing before the City Council.

The proposal, spearheaded by Cedar City Councilmember Paul Cozzens, would designate the water tank, located at Leigh Hill, as an official city monument, ensuring that the name and image would remain, vestiges of mascot name recently pulled from Cedar High School over concerns about its racial implications.

The council is scheduled to vote on the resolution on Wednesday, June 12.
